MAN CHARGED IN DEATH OF ELDERLY MAN

Denver District Attorney Beth McCann has formally charged a man in connection with the death of an elderly man.

Jonathan Diaz-Jimenez (dob: 01-17-1991) is charged with second degree murder (F2).  The charge was direct-filed in District Court on November 23.

The charge alleges that on the morning of November 18, 2018, in the area of Park Avenue and Lawrence Street, there was an altercation between the defendant and the victim, 66-year-old Anthony Lanford. The defendant assaulted the victim, who collapsed to the ground.  Two people assisted the victim to his feet when the defendant further allegedly hit one of them and ran away with his sunglasses. Mr. Lanford collapsed to the ground again and became unresponsive.  A surveillance camera from the nearby Samaritan House Homeless Shelter recorded the incident.

Police arrested the defendant near Park Avenue and Broadway.

Diaz-Jimenez is scheduled to appear on November 29, 2018, at 8:30 a.m. in courtroom 4G for advisement.
