Denver District Attorney Beth McCann Sworn in for Second Term

DENVER—This morning, Denver District Attorney Beth McCann was sworn in for her second term in office by the Honorable Theresa A. Spahn, Denver County Court Presiding Judge. Assistant District Attorney Zachary McCabe, all Chief Deputies, Deputies and Investigators also renewed their oath to support the Constitution of the United States, and of the State of Colorado.

After the swearing in ceremony, DA McCann addressed her staff (virtually). The following are comments from her address:

“By ensuring we live in a society that’s governed by laws, we help shape what kind of society we are going to have. It is our responsibility to the people of Denver to advance a society that is just, equitable and compassionate so that all of us can have trust in our criminal justice system.

“Every day, we work to be of service to the people in Denver. Behind the thousands of cases we handle each year is each of you. I am proud of your dedication and commitment as public servants to securing justice and to supporting the well-being of every person whose life we touch, most importantly survivors of crime. We represent, guide and support the people of Denver during some of the most serious and horrifically devastating situations they will ever experience, and we do it with integrity, steely resolve, and compassion.

“I believe in bringing fair and equal justice to the people we prosecute. We should recognize that defendants often make choices that are in part a result of their own experiences or circumstances in life. We must bring empathy and compassion to prosecution.

“I ran for this office because I believe in this important work that we do. Individuals, communities and organizations look to us to help provide safety. Upholding public safety is one of the most important functions of government, if not the most important. I am excited about the next four years and look forward to continuing this important and challenging work together.”
